Marcus Oakley is originally from Norfolk, a coastal county in England’s south-east. Marcus Oakley’s work is inspired by many things – both retrospective and contemporary. These influences include folky, harmonic and melodic musics of all kinds; the pastoral and folkloric delights of the countryside and the various eccentric beasts and humans that inhabit it; the joys of cycling; the stimulations of tea; the dizzy geometries of architecture and design, and overall the wonders of making stuff.
essomenia artist statement:
As the future is whizzing past, I nostalgically look back to a future of 1970’s and 1980’s science fiction films. It is strange thinking of a future from the past. A plant recently died in the flat and I thought about the 1972 film- Silent Running. I saw some ants crawling around and the 1974 film Phase IV creeped into my mind. As I get a little older everyday I feel lucky I don’t live in the weird and sexy world of the 1974 film Logan’s Run. These films echo around in my mind. They seem to somehow blend symbiotically with my present. Thankfully, so far, I have not tried making a mountain out of mashed potato.
